Range Envelope
An industrial safety parameter specifies the minimum separation that must be maintained between a sensor or machine component and a potential hazard to prevent damage or injury. The safe operating distance accounts for sensor latency, actuator response times and human approach speeds. It is verified during system integration to guarantee that hazardous motion ceases before contact can occur, preventing accidents in the work cell.
This metric is defined by regulatory standards for machinery safety and remains an established parameter for risk assessment.
Shielding Effectiveness
Interference from electromagnetic fields or metal objects in the surroundings can alter the detection boundary, requiring a larger margin of safety. This separation is determined by the environmental conditions of the workshop.
Installation Margin
Mechanical mounting brackets must be rigid enough to prevent the sensor from shifting toward the hazardous area during operation. Any vibration or deflection in the bracket can reduce the actual separation below the required safe operating distance, which creates an operational hazard.
Compliance Boundary
Validation of this distance involves simulating maximum velocity events and measuring the stop time of the machinery. This procedure must be repeated annually to ensure that mechanical wear has not increased the stopping time beyond the original design limits.
