Integrity Metric
Metric for determining how consistently a filter preserves the temporal relationship between different frequency components. Passband phase linearity indicates that the group delay remains constant across the specified frequency range. A system with high linearity ensures that complex waveforms pass through without temporal spreading or distortion.
Distortion Mechanism
Deviations from a flat phase response result in signal dispersion where different frequencies arrive at the output at different times. Maintaining passband phase linearity is essential for digital communication systems where pulse shape determines the bit error rate. If the phase response curves, the resulting jitter can close the eye diagram and prevent reliable data recovery.
Characterization Procedure
Characterization uses a network analyzer to measure the phase shift at discrete steps. This instrument determines if the passband phase linearity remains within the bounds required for high speed data transmission.
Design Tradeoff
Optimization of this parameter often requires increasing the order of the filter or using all pass equalizers. While achieving perfect passband phase linearity is difficult in analog circuits, digital filters can attain it through symmetric coefficient sets. The tolerance for non linearity is set by the modulation scheme and the required signal to noise ratio of the receiver.
