Circuit Position
Transistor configurations that sit between the load and the common ground allow for simplified control of high current devices. A typical low side mosfet switch functions by pulling the output to zero volts when the gate signal exceeds the threshold potential. This architecture stays effective until the ground potential shifts significantly due to heavy current return paths.
Voltage Control
Logic levels from a simple microcontroller are sufficient to turn the channel on or off in most low side designs. Using a low side mosfet switch reduces the need for complex high side gate drive circuitry or charge pumps. Thermal dissipation happens primarily through the copper layers attached to the drain tab.
Output Specification
Measurement of the drain to source resistance occurs at the target operating temperature to calculate total conduction loss. Testers verify low side mosfet switch integrity by checking leakage current in the off state against maximum supply levels. Tolerances are defined by the current handling capacity of the bond wires inside the plastic housing.
Load Regulation
Efficient switching minimizes the heat produced during fast pwm operation. Every low side mosfet switch requires a flyback diode when controlling inductive loads such as motors. Current flows from positive to ground.
