Voltage Capability
Operational limits defining the maximum output voltage a power supply can maintain while delivering a regulated current determine the compatibility of the device with specific diode strings. The led driver compliance ensures that the circuit has enough headroom to overcome the forward voltage drop of the load. If the load requires more voltage than the supply can provide, the current regulation fails.
Load Variation
Temperature changes and aging cause the forward voltage of semiconductors to shift during operation. A wide range for led driver compliance allows the system to remain stable even as these environmental factors alter the electrical characteristics of the array. The driver must adjust its output dynamically to keep the current constant.
Efficiency Optimization
Efficiency optimization within internal switching circuitry is most effective when working near the upper limit of the rated voltage range. Excessive headroom leads to wasted power and heat generation within the driver components. Matching the load to the led driver compliance range is therefore a primary task in thermal management.
Protection Trigger
Safety circuits monitor the output to prevent damage if an open circuit or a short occurs. When the voltage exceeds the led driver compliance limit, the device typically enters a fault mode or shuts down entirely.
