Performance Metric
Normalized error ratio values calculate the absolute difference between an individual laboratory measurement result and the reference value relative to their combined expanded uncertainties. An En number absolute value less than or equal to unity confirms that the participant result aligns with the reference value within stated uncertainty bounds. When the absolute En value exceeds unity, the reported measurement differs from the reference value by more than the combined uncertainty estimates predict.
Alternative z-score metrics evaluate performance relative to participant population standard deviations, identifying outliers that require internal corrective action within individual facility quality systems.
Discrepancy Resolution
Out-of-spec results trigger systematic root cause investigations into facility equipment and environmental controls. Environmental temperature gradients, uncalibrated reference artifacts, fluid contamination and software translation errors introduce unexplained offset biases into measurement results. Technical audits review uncertainty budgets and calibration procedures to locate the exact origin of measurement variance before retesting occurs.
Traceability Evidence
Accreditation bodies examine comparison outcomes during periodic facility assessments to grant or maintain formal scope of accreditation. Interlaboratory results provide empirical evidence supporting declared measurement uncertainties listed on accreditation certificates. Successful participation validates that measurement procedures yield consistent outcomes across geographic boundaries and different testing platforms.
