Interface Standard
Technical specification for connecting transducers to digital systems using a mixed mode interface. The ieee 1451 4 standard defines the communication between a sensor and an instrument via a Transducer Electronic Data Sheet. This allows the measurement system to read calibration parameters and identity information directly from the device.
Storage Mechanism
Storage of manufacturer data and sensitivity factors occurs within a non volatile memory chip embedded in the sensor. The ieee 1451 4 protocol utilizes a single wire interface to transmit this digital information before switching to an analog mode for measurement. This dual functionality simplifies the wiring of large sensor arrays and reduces the risk of manual data entry errors during system setup.
Compliance Requirement
Certification involves verifying the memory structure against the standard templates. Compliance with ieee 1451 4 is confirmed when the reader can successfully parse every field in the electronic data sheet.
Electrical Boundary
Reliable operation of ieee 1451 4 is sensitive to cable length and parasitic capacitance on the communication line. Long distances between the transducer and the reader can degrade the digital signal, leading to checksum failures. Electrical characteristics of the interconnect must stay within the bounds defined by the specification to prevent signal degradation.
