Oceanic Instrumentation
Conductivity, temperature, and pressure sensors measure the physical properties of the water column to derive salinity and density profiles. A ctd probe transmits these analog signals to surface recording equipment through an electromechanical cable or stores the data in internal memory for post-recovery analysis. The primary utility resides in the determination of water mass characteristics and mixing processes.
Signal Metrology
Accurate results depend on the conversion of raw frequency or voltage outputs into SI units through manufacturer calibration coefficients. These sensors maintain traceability to national standards by comparison against high-precision laboratory baths or deadweight pressure testers. Electronic drift occurs over time due to biofouling or salt accumulation on the sensing elements.
A laboratory calibration verifies the stability of the response slope and intercept at defined intervals to quantify the measurement uncertainty.
Deployment Mechanics
Field technicians mount the device within a protective frame to prevent mechanical shock during rapid descent or contact with the seabed. The intake geometry ensures that water samples flow past the sensing elements without contamination from the boundary layer of the housing. Thermal inertia affects the temperature measurement when moving through sharp gradients, requiring a time-constant correction to synchronize the data streams.
Proper installation orientation keeps the pressure port clear of obstruction to avoid depth errors.
Measurement Integrity
Variations in fluid density induce buoyancy forces that alter the descent velocity and stability of the platform. Data filtering removes noise spikes caused by electrical interference or cavitation near the conductivity cell. Salinity calculations incorporate the pressure correction to account for the compression of the seawater.
The system performance relies on the alignment of the sampling interval with the physical dimensions of the sampled water parcel to avoid aliasing errors.
