Protection Classification
Enclosure standards define the level of protection that electrical housings provide against the ingress of high-pressure liquid and dust. This specific level of sealing, identified as the ip69k rating, is the highest category on the international scale. The standard ensures that the internal electronics remain completely dry when subjected to intensive cleaning.
Compliance is verified through rigorous washdown testing.
Test Environment
Testing involves spraying heated water from a specialized high-pressure nozzle at close range. The housing undergoes a continuous stream of water heated to eighty degrees Celsius at pressures up to one hundred bar. This water is directed from several angles including ninety, sixty, thirty and zero degrees.
A rotating turntable ensures that all seams and seals of the device are exposed to the high-force stream during the test period.
Seal Integrity
Elastic gaskets must withstand the thermal shock and mechanical stress of the hot spray. The ip69k rating requires materials that do not degrade or lose elasticity under extreme temperature differentials. Silicone or fluoroelastomer seals are typically chosen to prevent liquid migration into the housing.
Industrial Application
Food processing facilities require frequent chemical sanitization to maintain hygiene. Here, the ip69k rating allows sensors and transmitters to survive daily high-pressure washdowns without failing. This resistance reduces production downtime.
